The Great Depression of the 1930's convinced economists and the government to get a better handle on what was happening with the economy. Economists began assembling huge quantities of data collected from a variety of sources across America. These data were organized and reported periodically by the federal government. The resulting system for measuring the nation's economy has been hailed as one of the greatest achievements of the twentieth century. Its primary developers won a Nobel Prize for their work.
